Fertility Support

Infertility affects 6 million American couples.  Approximately sixty  percent of the cases are traced to problems with the woman and up to forty percent are attributed to the male.

There may be many causes of infertility.  Some examples of causes for women: menstrual irregularities, PMS, anovulation, difficult implantation, endometriosis, hormonal imbalance, scarring from sexually transmitted disease, increased age, years of overwork, eating disorders, or stress.

For men, it may be due to hormone deficiency, environmental pollutants, scarring from sexually transmitted disease, decreased sperm count, or decreased sperm motility.

Acupuncture helps women by regulating the menstrual cycle and stimulating the flow of energy and blood.  Blood circulation will increase to the organs, especially to the uterus, making the lining of the uterus more receptive.

Acupuncture also affects the autonomic nervous system, helping the uterus to relax, making the environment again more receptive to implantation. Acupuncture acts as a self-regulating mechanism for hormones, thereby helping to correct any hormonal imbalances.  By moving stuck qi, the pain and complications of endometriosis may be lessened.  Acupuncture is excellent to tonify the body, therefore boosting energy, as well as helping to release endorphins in order to create a very relaxed state-of-mind.

For men, acupuncture can increase the motility levels of the sperm, as well as increasing the number of healthy sperm that will have good sperm structure and quality.

After just one treatment, people can experience a balancing effect.  However, we encourage weekly treatments to maximize the effect and maintain the body’s balance.  Some people many need treatments for up to three months.

Chinese herbs may be recommended.  Ideally, these could be taken for up to three months to prepare the body for conception to take place.

For couples considering in-vitro fertilization, (IVF), acupuncture can be an effective adjunctive therapy.  We recommend preparing your body as much as possible.  The treatment effect builds on the body.  Some treatments are better than none.  One to two treatments a week for the month preceding the IVF would be ideal.

Some women may require more.  Then, on the day of implantation,  the woman would  receive an acupuncture treatment 25 minutes prior to the procedure, as well as 25 minutes after.  This would require the acupuncturist to come to the IVF center on the assigned day.  This protocol is based on a German study released in the 2002 Fertility and Sterility Journal. This study showed that acupuncture treatments on the day of implantation nearly doubled the chance of successful pregnancy.   This study has been replicated several times in America with the same results.
